Tributes Continue to Pour in for Kobe Bryant and Other Victims of Helicopter Crash

Family, friends, and fans continue to offer tributes to Kobe Bryant and the other victims of a tragic helicopter crash. On Sunday, January 26, 2020, Bryant, his daughter, and seven other individuals were flying in Bryant’s private helicopter to a basketball tournament. At approximately 10 a.m., the helicopter crashed in a field in Calabasas.

In addition to Kobe Bryant, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, seven other people were reportedly killed in the helicopter crash. Various reports have identified the victims of the helicopter crash to include several basketball teammates of Gianna, their parents, and coaches. The helicopter pilot was also killed in the crash.

Tributes to Kobe Bryant and the other victims of the helicopter crash have been offered around the country, including tributes in Michigan. The Varnum Building in Grand Rapids changed its lights to gold and purple in honor of the L.A. Lakers colors. A billboard tribute along I-96 read “Legend” in honor of Bryant. Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, posted a message on Instagram thanking everyone for their outpouring of support.

Sudden Tragedy Reminds Us We Should Be Prepared

Kobe Bryant was just 41 years old at the time of his death. His death was a tragic reminder that no one is guaranteed tomorrow. It is important that we take steps now to prepare for our own deaths so that our families and loved ones are protected in the event of our sudden death.

When a family member dies suddenly, loved ones typically are in shock. They do not know what to do next as they try to process the sudden and unexpected loss. However, life continues. Bills and living expenses must be paid. Children need support and guidance. Homes and cars need to be maintained. A probate estate needs to be opened to finalize the person’s final affairs.

Without a comprehensive estate, family members can experience additional stress and financial strain. A will, trust agreements, and other estate documents can ensure that a grieving family has the finances in place to pay for necessary expenses and bills while they grieve for their loved one. An estate plan also protects assets and resolves questions about inheritance.

If a person dies without a will or trust, the state intestate laws control the distribution of assets. An intestate estate can take longer to process, and funds that the family needs can be delayed or tied up in court. Also, minors or individuals with special needs could inherit a substantial portion of the estate, which would complicate matters significantly. Having an estate plan in place now can avoid these and many other problems should you pass away suddenly.

What Do I Need in My Estate Plan?

The basic estate planning tool that everyone needs is a will. Additionally, it may be wise to have a Durable Power of Attorney, Health Care Directives, and a HIPPA Authorization. In some cases, individuals may want to use one or more trust agreements to protect property, avoid probate, reduce tax liability, and exercise greater control over assets and inheritance.

Working with a Michigan estate planning attorney is one of the best ways to ensure that your family is protected after your death. An attorney can develop an estate plan that meets your needs and accomplishes your goals.
