Coronavirus and the Need For Powers of Attorney and Disability Documents in Michigan

Today we’re going to talk about the importance of powers of attorney, especially in times like this with the coronavirus and everything that’s going around. People may need medical attention sooner rather than later. One of the most important things right now is having your disability documents in place. A financial power of attorney, a medical power of attorney, and a personal care plan.

That financial power of attorney helps if someone needs to make financial decisions for you. The medical power of attorney, in Michigan we call this the patient advocate designation, helps appoint someone to make medical decisions if you’re unable to, which with everything going on right now is very important to have. And so one of the things we have is the ability to put together these documents for you virtually where we don’t even have to meet.

We can have a phone conference. We can have a video conference. And we can even do drive by signings where you can pull up, stay in your car and we could have even run out to get those documents notarized and witnessed, where you wouldn’t even have to leave your car. Similar to a drive through takeout. But these documents are super important. You need to have that financial power of attorney. You need to have that medical power of attorney.

And the third thing is that personal care plan, that document where if you were to need longterm care, what would it look like? Very important to have these in place. Everyone over the age of 18 should have that financial and medical power of attorney. And then if you’re around retirement age, you should have that personal care plan that outlines what longterm care would look like for you, if you’re to need longterm care. And if you want some assistance with that and you’re living in Michigan, we can help you throughout all of Michigan. Just give us a call or shoot us an email. Happy to help.
